  18. <p>     General Michel Aoun, the renegade Christian strongman who
  19. considers himself Lebanon's rightful leader, was spoiling for
  20. a fight. Irritated because his fellow Christians in the
  21. Phalangist militia were tacitly supporting a peace agreement
  22. giving authority to President Elias Hrawi, Aoun last week
  23. ordered his troops to attack Phalangist barracks. When the
  24. Phalangists struck back, the result was a civil war within a
  25. civil war that turned the Christian enclave of East Beirut into
  26. a free-fire zone. By week's end more than 140 civilians were
  27. dead.

  29. <p>     Aoun, who commands 15,000 troops, apparently underestimated
  30. the 10,000-strong Phalangists, who not only held their own but
  31. overran a naval base, a landing strip and an army garrison held
  32. by Aoun's forces.
  33. </p>
  34. <p>     Nasrallah Sfeir, the patriarch of Lebanon's Maronites, the
  35. country's largest Christian group, pleaded in vain for the
  36. factions to stop fighting. "This is suicide," he lamented.
